Tapered lock bushings are one of the most common types of flangeless bushings. Bushings of this type are made of precision cast iron. It is computer etched for size identification. High-strength screws attach the tapered portion of the assembly to the hub. This strong connection allows the transmission of high torques. In sprocket installation, tapered lock bushings ensure proper sprocket installation and easy alignment.

Installation

1. Clean all oil, dirt, and paint from the shaft, bushing holes, bushing exterior, and bores of components (sprockets, pulleys, etc.).
2. Insert the bushing into the assembly. Match hole patterns, not threaded holes (each hole is threaded on one side only).
3. Thread the set screw or cap screw into the half-threaded hole shown below. Install the assembly on the shaft.
4. Alternately set the torque setting or cap screw* to the recommended torque setting in the table below.
5. Fill all unoccupied holes with grease.

Removal

1. Remove any retaining or cap screws.
2. Insert the set screw or cap screw into the above hole.
3. To reinstall, complete all five (5) installation instructions.

Application of Taper Lock Bushing

The Taper-Lock bushing system makes the sprocket hub narrower than ever, while the left-aligned hub design keeps the shaft closer to the bearing and eliminates issues associated with high overhung loads. The gradual taper of the bushing makes it a perfect fit and provides the equivalent of a shrink fit. However, the benefits don't stop there! In addition to low overhung load capacity, they also offer high precision.
Another common application for tapered bushings is in power transmission components. The tapered shafts of these devices are attached to rollers or pulleys. Wedge-action tapered grips lock them in place without deforming the shaft. These tapered bushings are generally available in QD and Taper-Lock styles. While both styles are very effective, each should be used sparingly.
