Types of DC Motors

So far, this guide has broadly explained how DC motors work, the history of these mechanisms, and what they look like. While the principles are the same across variants, there are actually several different types of DC motors, which offer specific advantages and disadvantages over each other.

This section of the guide will look at the four main types of DC motor - brushless, brushed, shunt, and series.

▍Brushless DC motor

Due to the development of solid-state electronic technology, a brushless DC motor is also called an electronic commutation motor or synchronous DC motor, which is different from a brush motor.
The key difference between brushless DC motors and other types of motors is that they have no commutator, which is replaced by an electronic servo mechanism that can detect and adjust the rotor angle.
A Brushless DC motor has several advantages. The commutator uses soft contacts called "brushes", which will wear out over time. Therefore, a brushless DC motor is more durable and safer than the more classic design.

How does a brushless DC motor work?

All motors generate torque by alternating the polarity of rotating magnets connected to the rotor and fixed magnets on the surrounding stator. At least one of the magnets in this group is an electromagnet, which is made of coils around the iron core.

▍Brushed DC motors

The Brush DC motor is the original DC motor, which can be traced back to the original design of Sprague. As we have discussed in this guide, the classic brush motor has a commutator that reverses the current and generates unidirectional torque every half cycle.
Although brushless DC motors are still popular in electric propulsion, cranes, paper machines, and rolling mills, in recent years, many brushless motors have been eliminated due to more efficient brushless models.

How does a brushed DC motor work?

As has been explained in this guide already, brushed DC motors utilize soft contacts known as ‘brushes’ to ensure the motor rotates in one direction. Brushed motors’ speed can be varied by the operating voltage or the strength of the magnetic field.
